Everything we do on our phones, computers, smart devices, and websites creates a type of “digital footprint.” This footprint includes valuable personal information, making it a prime target for scammers and hackers looking to steal our identities. For this Fraud Friday, we’ll break down what this means and some methods for prevention.
Here are five simple steps you can take to reduce your digital footprint from being followed, tracked, and targeted:
1. Secure your accounts. Use strong, unique passwords – no more Password123 or using easy-to-guess info! Also be sure to enable two-factor authentication (2FA). This is crucial for your sensitive information on accounts like email and online banking. 2FA adds an extra security layer by requiring a second verification method.
2. Stay up to date. Regularly updating your security software, operating systems, browsers, apps, and devices will help guard you against the latest cyber threats.
3. Secure your Wi-Fi. Your home Wi-Fi network is the hub for all your connected devices. When’s the last time you changed your Wi-Fi password? Replace default network and router admin passwords with strong, unique ones.
4. Lock your devices. Set your phone and computer to automatically lock when not in use. This helps prevent unauthorized access if you lose your device.
5. Backup your data. Ensure you have backups and copies of your important information, whether in the cloud or on an external drive. This way, you can recover it if your device is hacked, lost, or stolen.
These are five easy things you can do today to give fraudsters less of a fighting chance. Stay vigilant and remember to report scammers or hackers at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
