Fraud Friday: QR Code Package Scams

Feb 28, 2025 | Fraud Friday, General News

Scammers are constantly finding new methods for targeting their victims. One of the latest includes malicious QR codes on mailed packages. Don’t worry, we’re here to break it down for you on this Fraud Friday and give you some insider tips on spotting and stopping the scam.

QR Code Package Scams

An unexpected package arrives at your door. It’s addressed to you but from an unknown sender. You open it and find a note that says it’s a gift, and it prompts you to scan a QR code for more info, to find out who sent it, or to get details on how to return it. Unfortunately, the QR code has been set up by scammers to steal your personal information.

Did You Order It?

The first thing you should ask yourself when you get an unexpected package in the mail is: Who ordered it? Check with your household and double check your accounts. If there’s no trace of it being ordered, this is a big red flag.

When in Doubt, Don’t Scan

The biggest learning lesson from this scam is not to scan random QR codes. Just because there is a QR code doesn’t mean it’s legitimate. Anyone can create QR codes, even scammers. Unless you know the sender or it’s from a verified company, don’t scan QR codes addressed to you in the mail.
