Fraud Friday: USPS Texts

May 9, 2025 | Featured, Fraud Friday, General News

Have you ever received a text message supposedly from the United States Postal Service (USPS) – or another package delivery carrier such as FedEx or DHL? These texts may say things like: “Your delivery is on the way,” or “There’s a problem with delivery,” or will tell you that you need to confirm shipping details, etc.

These messages usually include a link to “fix” the issue or get more information. Here’s the problem: that message probably isn’t from a delivery service. It’s likely a scam. And those links to “fix” your problem are your problem – if you click them.

Scammers use fake text messages like these to trick you into clicking malicious links. These links often lead to websites made to look like legitimate companies. Once there, you may be asked to provide financial information or personal data. Anything you enter into those sites goes straight to the scammers — your name, address, credit card number, and even your money.

Here’s how you can protect yourself against USPS text message scams:

  • Don’t click links. If you’re expecting a package, check the status directly through the retailer or delivery service’s website — not through a text message.
  • Use text filters. Many mobile devices have settings to filter messages from unknown numbers. Ask your cell phone provider directly how they can help.
  • Report suspicious messages. Within your text messages, use the “report junk” or “report spam” feature when you receive suspicious messages. You can also forward the message to 7726 (SPAM).
