Behind the Desk with Chris Carlson, Credit & Financial Analyst, Guthrie Center Branch
Finding His Way to GCSB
Chris Carlson’s journey to Guthrie County State Bank started with a practical decision—his commute. After 14 years working for a larger bank in Des Moines while living in west-central Iowa, he needed to be closer to home as his kids became more involved in activities. As he’s been heard to say, “It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Since joining GCSB in 2015, Chris has brought his deep expertise in credit and finance to the team, helping support local businesses, farmers, and families.
A Career Built on Numbers
Beginning with his degree in Finance, Banking, and Economics from BVU, Chris knew he wanted to work with numbers and statistics. His role at GCSB allowed him to continue to do just that— analyzing financials, assessing risk, and helping guide local farmers and small business owners to smart lending decisions. Yet for Chris, the job is about more than just numbers; it’s about giving back to the community. Whether he’s hard at work at the bank, or hard at work handing out cookies on Beggars’ Night, he values the connections he’s built through GCSB.
Beyond Banking
When he’s not at work, Chris stays busy watching his kids compete in sports and activities. In addition to his passion for football, he loves gardening and is often found tending to his small orchard and vineyard. And while his early dream of coaching high school football didn’t pan out, he’s found his way to coaching soccer instead.
Chris’s dedication to both his work and the community makes him an essential part of the GCSB team. Next time you stop in, be sure to say hello and ask him about his favorite movie, The Blues Brothers, “possibly the greatest musical ever written.”
