Spotting Scams on Online Marketplaces

Apr 17, 2026 | Featured, Fraud Friday, General News

Online marketplaces and social media platforms make it easy to buy and sell items locally. From big buys like farm equipment and vehicles to smaller items like tools and household decor, these platforms have become a common way for people to connect with buyers and sellers in their communities. Unfortunately, scammers use these same platforms to target unsuspecting shoppers.

How Marketplace Scams Usually Work

Scammers often post listings for high-demand items at unusually low prices to attract quick interest. The listing may look legitimate, complete with photos and detailed descriptions. Once someone shows interest, the scammer tries to move the conversation off the marketplace platform and into private messages, text, or email.

At that point, they may ask for a deposit to “hold” the item, request payment through apps or wire transfers, or claim they will ship the item once payment is received. In many cases, the item never existed in the first place.

Common Warning Signs

  • Unusually low prices
  • Sellers who refuse to meet in person
  • Pressure to send a deposit or payment quickly

How to Protect Yourself

When using online marketplaces, try to keep communication and payment within the platform whenever possible. If you are purchasing locally, meet the seller in a safe public location and inspect the item before paying. Avoid sending deposits or advance payments for items you have not seen.

If a deal feels rushed or too good to be true, it may be a scam. Taking a moment to pause and verify details can prevent financial loss.
